Safety/Health Performance

Safety is an ExxonMobil core value and an indicator of overall Sakhalin-1 performance. We have rigorous safety management programs in place, and demand that all of our contractors and sub contractors do the same. The project has demonstrated world class safety performance with approximately 70 million hours worked with a lost time injury rate of 0.02 per 200,000 hours worked. This rate is several times better than the global oil and gas construction industry average. This excellent result was obtained through a partnership approach with our Russian and other contractors, strong leadership and our unwavering safety message, active worker involvement and communication, effective risk management and proactive monitoring of potential hazards and trends. As an ExxonMobil subsidiary, ENL uses similar safety/health management practices. Those practices have put ExxonMobil in a leadership position within its industry, as illustrated below.

ExxonMobil has established Oil & Gas Industry leading safety performance that has been recognized by the U.S. Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Service (MMS) on numerous occasions. MMS is the U.S. federal agency within the Department of the Interior that manages the nation's natural gas, oil and other mineral resources on the Outer Continental Shelf.

Prior to the merger of Exxon and Mobil, the two companies received the MMS National Safety Award for Excellence (SAFE) a combined total of five times (1984, 1985, 1988, 1989 and 1995). Since the merger, ExxonMobil was presented the MMS SAFE Award in 2002 and 2003 and was a finalist for the Award in 2004 and 2005.

ExxonMobil received the National SAFE Award in the high-activity category for the Outer Continental Shelf in recognition of the company's safety record and operational performance at its offshore facilities in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of California. The MMS SAFE Award, established in 1983, honors companies that achieve outstanding safety and environmental results, and that demonstrate notable efforts to train and motivate their employees to conduct offshore operations in a highly responsible manner. The SAFE program also highlights to the public that companies conduct offshore oil and gas activities safely and in a pollution-free manner.

This award recognizes ExxonMobil employees and contractors for their accomplishments and their commitment to ExxonMobil's core values of safe and environmentally sound operations. It also shows that the company is moving closer to its vision of an incident-free workplace. ExxonMobil believes that both employees and contractors share this award as they are vital partners in helping achieve these results.

The MMS has also selected ExxonMobil for other prestigious awards listed below:
  • Corporate Citizenship Award (presented in 1999 and 2002)
  • Mineral Revenues Stewardship Award (presented in 2004)
  • Safe Operations and Accurate Reporting Award (presented in 2004 and 2006)
The Corporate Citizen Award recognizes not only the company's outstanding operational performance but also its exemplary production and royalty reporting record.

The Mineral Revenues Stewardship Award recognizes companies that demonstrate exceptional compliance with mineral revenue laws, regulations, lease terms, and financial requirements and cooperation in issue resolution.

The Safe Operations and Accurate Reporting Award (SOAR) recognizes OCS lessees that are outstanding in the areas of offshore operating performance and fiscal responsibility.
